ordanian king calls for transparency as Aqaba returns to operations

The Jordanian king has called for transparency behind the destructive chlorine gas leak which killed 13 people at Aqaba port.

King Abdullah II of Jordan chaired a meeting on Tuesday 28 June at the National Centre for Security and Crisis Management, calling for authorities to identify shortcomings in the incident, and for those responsible to be held accountable to law.

The king also noted the need for new precautions to prevent a repeat of such a disaster occurring again in the future.

On Monday 27 June a container filled with 25 tons of chlorine gas fell whilst being transported, killing 13 and injuring more than 250.

Jordanian state TV imagery depicts a crane hoisting the tank from a truck, the tank falling and exploding onto the deck of a ship.

State-run Petra news agency reported on 28 June that Aqaba port had returned to normalcy, according to Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh.

Khasawneh said that there were no more risks from the chlorine gas concentrations following an inspection of the accident site earlier this week.

Earlier in June a fire broke out at a storage depot near the city of Chittagong, Bangladesh causing a massive explosion, killing 49 people.

Following the explosion, shipping giant Maersk has reported that the logistics ecosystem at Chittagong is under extreme inland pressure.
