Port of Manzanillo resumes ops after earthquake

The Port of Manzanillo, Mexico’s largest container port, has resumed operations after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit the country earlier this week.

Officials at the port said that navigation operations restarted on 21 September for all types of commercial and tourist vessels.

Port activities had been previously suspended after the earthquake on 19 September rocked the country killing two people at the port, authorities said.

The number of cargo trucks entering the commercial port had also been significantly reduced.

The Port of Manzanillo is one of the main gateways for international trade with Mexico, handling about 48 per cent of all cargo entering the country.

Earlier this month, Contecon Manzanillo (CMSA), International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI)’s business unit at the port, announced it will add four new state-of-the-art rubber-tyred gantries (RTG).

Representing an investment of $8 million, the new RTGs will help speed up container loading and unloading times at the terminal according to ICTSI.
