US Marine Highway Program gets $12 million injection

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) has announced $12.4 million available in funds through the United States Marine Highway Program (USMHP).

According to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg: “America’s waterways serve as critical links in our nation’s supply chains. These investments in our marine highways will help to strengthen our supply chains, reduce emissions, and create jobs across the country.”

Maritime Administrator Ann Phillips added: “Since the establishment of the marine highways programme, MARAD has awarded more than $91.6 million in competitive grants to eligible organisations for marine highway services.

“These grants have supported the development and expansion of marine highways, vessels, and landside ports and infrastructure, which are critical to building supply chain resilience.”

The grant recipients will be selected based on various criteria, such as the impact on goods transportation, non-federal funding investment, domestic preference use, environmental justice, equity, and geographical diversity.

The Department will consider how the project addresses challenges in rural areas.

Organisations interested in the grant must submit their applications before 28 April.

Last month, MARAD announced another Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), making more than $662 million available for its Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP).

The PIDP investment is expected to modernise US ports, strengthen its supply chains, and reduce shipping time and costs.
